Press Release

The Wisconsin Division for Early Childhood (WDEC) and the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association (WECA) has named Paula Clay one of two Early Childhood Teachers of the Year.

This year’s Early Childhood Teacher of the Year has worked with young children for over 30 years. For the past 10 years Paula has worked with both special education and general education in the Cumberland School district. Paula was fortunate to be able to be part of writing the Birth to 3 grant for the state on WI.  The area became one of the first learning sites for the State of Wisconsin in the area of birth to three.  The state continued to use a lot of their ideas and materials when birth to three was mandated statewide.

Paula has set high standards for herself and is strongly committed to excellence in early childhood education. She has consistently gone “above and beyond” in her job duties ensuring the highest possible services are provided to the children and families. Paula has come up with innovative ways in her program to communicate with parents of her children.  Additionally she uses many sensory integration activities and motor activities with all of the children in the program because often the strategies we use with kids who are “Special” are good for everyone.. The 2009 Early Childhood Teacher of the year is Paula Clay.

The awards ceremony was held during the 55nd Annual Wisconsin Early Childhood Education & Care Conference, “Children Connect Us”, October 22-24, 2009 at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.

Other award recipients at the conference include Dana (Herings) Friedrichs, Student Teacher of the Year; Jean Gagner, Early Childhood Teacher of the Year; Kelly Jankowski Student Teacher of the Year, Jane Lind, Outstanding Partner in Early Education and Care, Eau Claire Family Literacy and the Breakfast Club, Collaborative Teams of the Year.

The awards were presented by Mary Jo Hite, WDEC President; Julia Townsend, WECA President;  and Ruth Nyland, WDEC President-Elect; at the Conference Professional Development Luncheon.

Both WDEC and WECA are state chapters of national professional organizations devoted to insuring quality care and education for young children and their families.
